Department Overview

The Department of Music, a constituent member of the newly founded School of the Arts, boasts vibrant training programs in opera, composition, conducting, instrumental performance, and jazz. Our diverse faculty share commitments to inclusive programming and antiracism.

The department offers the Bachelor of Music degree in performance, the Bachelor of Arts (in performance, composition, or musicology), and the Master of Music degree with concentrations in opera/voice, collaborative piano, instrumental performance, conducting, composition, music history and literature.

Job Description

The Department of Music at Binghamton University (SUNY) seeks to hire an Opera Director and Producer. The initial appointment is for up to three years, as a full-time lecturer beginning on August 17, 2026, with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and innovative opera director and producer with significant experience teaching an opera workshop class and working as a private dramatic coach.

The responsibilities of this position include:

* Direct and produce two fully staged opera productions per academic year and oversee an opera scenes program each semester.

* Teach a weekly Opera Workshop / Stage Techniques course, focused on dramatic interpretation, movement, characterization, and collaborative performance.

* Provide weekly private dramatic coaching sessions for 8-10 graduate and undergraduate vocal performance majors per semester.

* Collaborate closely with voice faculty and other related fields including instrumental, theatre and cinema.

* Manage production staff, designers, and technical personnel to support the artistic and logistical needs of opera productions.

* Additional areas of teaching may be determined depending on departmental needs and the candidate's specific interests, expertise, and qualifications.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

* Master's degree in Opera Directing or a closely related field.

* Record of achievement in directing and producing opera at the college and/or professional level.

* Extensive knowledge of operatic repertoire including repertoire from all major historical periods.

* Broad understanding of all aspects of opera production including lighting, theatre and costume design and supertitles.

* Experience teaching Opera Workshop classes at the college and/or professional level.

* Experience working with singers in private dramatic coachings.

* Effective interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

* Record of achievement in directing and producing opera with a national and/or international visibility.

* Working knowledge in Italian, French and German languages.
