Major Responsibilities
- Deliver classroom instruction aligned with the Serv Safe® Manager Certification exam, including food safety, sanitation, and regulatory compliance.
- Prepare students to successfully pass the Serv Safe® Manager certification exam through structured lessons, practice tests, and review sessions.
- Teach core topics such as foodborne illness prevention, personal hygiene, time and temperature control, cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitizing, and HACCP principles.
- Provide hands‑on culinary instruction to reinforce classroom learning, including basic knife skills and kitchen safety, food preparation techniques (measuring, mixing, cooking methods, etc.), proper food handling, storage, and sanitation practices, and kitchen organization and workflow.
- Supervise students in a lab/kitchen environment, ensuring safe and sanitary practices at all times.
- Maintain compliance with local and state health regulations and program standards.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments aligned with course objectives.
- Administer quizzes, practice exams, and final assessments to monitor student progress.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and certification readiness.
- Promote professionalism, teamwork, and workplace readiness skills in a culinary setting.
- Communicate student progress and concerns with program staff and administration.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current Serv Safe® Manager Certification (required).
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's degree or higher preferred).
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a commercial kitchen, food service operation, or culinary field.
- Strong knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and kitchen operations.
- Ability to teach both classroom theory and hands‑on culinary skills.
- Experience working with or instructing adult learners (preferred but not required).
- Basic computer skills for instruction, testing, and recordkeeping.
- Ability to maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen/classroom environment.
- Applicants who are not already NYS certified must complete the necessary steps to apply for Adult Education Instructor certification.
