The Art History Department at Binghamton University invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor - Asian Art, post-900 CE, beginning Fall 2027. A PhD in art history or a related field by the start date of the appointment is required. A promising record of research and experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level is preferred.

This position seeks to build on and reinvigorate the department's historical strength in the study of the art and culture of Asia, including Islamic art and the art and architecture of East Asia. Field and period of specialization post-900 CE are open. We especially welcome applications from those sharing our commitment to new theoretical perspectives and cross-disciplinary approaches to the discipline.

The successful candidate will develop a curriculum that expands existing geographical and historical areas of concentration in the department, work collaboratively with colleagues in Art History as well as faculty in other departments and programs, and participate actively in the intellectual life of the university. The teaching and scholarship interests of the ideal candidate will include transregional and interdisciplinary approaches.

Binghamton University fosters a variety of interdisciplinary programs, including the Center for Middle East and North African Studies and the Asian and Asian American Studies Department, and our new colleague will be encouraged to contribute to one or more of these. Resources on campus to support professional and scholarly development include the School of the Arts, which fosters collaboration across its five departments (including Art History) and the Binghamton University Art Museum.

Responsibilities include teaching courses at all undergraduate and graduate levels. This position entails a 2-2 course load, with typically one undergraduate lecture and one joint undergraduate / graduate seminar offered per semester.

• PhD in art history or a related field by August 16, 2027

• Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
• Published research in a peer-reviewed publication
