Title: Lead Engineer - Distribution Planning

Reports to: Sr Director - Integrated System Planning

Location: NY Rochester or Binghamton

Work Type: Office

Salary Range: $114,332 to $142,916

Responsibilities
  • Able to lead, mentor, and develop others toward a common objective, coaching teams to successfully complete commitments.
  • Collaborate on and perform comprehensive distribution area studies, including voltage, thermal, N‑1, and power‑factor assessments.
  • Process, manipulate, understand, and represent data produced by analytical software, power‑system study reports, or extracted from databases.
  • Apply established distribution criteria using sound utility‑engineering practices to identify deficiencies in the distribution system.
  • Cite and interpret applicable reliability criteria (e.g., IEEE 1547, 519, 1366 Standards, ANSI Voltage Standards, NFPA).
  • Recommend distribution automation devices and develop designs compliant with program objectives.
  • Apply distribution resiliency criteria to develop compliant designs and recommendations.
  • Innovate and integrate improvements to increase precision and efficiency of distribution planning.
  • Develop thorough understanding and application of distribution planning tools such as GIS (SMWeb, Smart Map), SAP, and load‑data systems.
  • Develop subject‑matter expertise to mentor, support, and lead the team in advancing business needs.
  • Collaborate and interact with internal teams and industry peers on regional and divisional activities.
  • Assist during storm restoration efforts.

  • Theoretical Engineering knowledge: planning, operations and engineering design, analytics, modeling & calculation (e.g., symmetric components, per‑unit); understanding of the business model.
  • Advanced competency level.
  • Practical engineering experience/application: planning, operations and engineering design, construction (e.g., field experience, standardization, business‑case development, stakeholder defense).

  • Engineering documentation: ability to document, interpret, review, and approve engineering work done by others.
  • Advanced competency level.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance environment: local, state and federal regulatory standards and requirements (NERC, NPCC, ISO, PUC, etc.).

  • Power system studies – knowledge & interpretation of study assumptions and results (e.g., comprehensive area studies, power flow, DER, voltage, contingency, phase imbalance, power‑factor correction, short circuit, reliability, resiliency, capacity, distribution automation).

Education & Experience Requirements

BSEE required; additional consideration for advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., MSEE, PE). 7+ years of industry‑related experience.
