The Market Manager is a part‑time position with two primary roles in supporting the mission of the BFM. First, the Manager is responsible for planning and organization of weekly meetings. They recruit potential vendors, approve applications from interested vendors and communicate with members of the market (vendors, community partners and the Board of Directors) on market procedures and decisions. Second, the Manager serves as the on‑site, public‑facing director during weekly market sessions.
They prepare the site by assigning vendor locations, lead set up and tear down, oversee sales and services and provide vendor and customer assistance.
Market Managers must be excited to have a dynamic list of responsibilities. Tasks shift based on need and season. Applicants should demonstrate exceptional professionalism, strong communication skills (oral and written), creative problem solving, adept use of technology for record keeping and social media, a growth mindset and be self‑motivated. The role requires physical labor in outdoor conditions, including but not limited to: loading and unloading a car, lifting up to 50 lbs, setting up tents, carrying large boxes, and working in rain, heat/cold and exposure to wind.
The Manager reports to the Board of Directors (BOD).
The Manager ensures the success of the BFM by planning, supervising and reporting on market operations. Time commitment fluctuates by week and season, with an average of 7-10 hours/week and a mandatory weekly commitment of Sundays from 10-3.
- Identifies gaps in vendor line up, recruits and accepts vendors, creates a diverse line up of vendors
- Accurately conveys policies and procedures to vendors based on Vendor Agreement document
- Working understanding of SNAP, EBT, Veggie
RX and other programs that BFM offers - Establishes and distributes a market map with appropriate layout considerations 4 days early
- Ensures all necessary vendor permits, insurance and documentation are accounted for
- Maintains all equipment and supplies required for weekly market sessions
- Accurately convey vendor attendance and market logistics to staff, volunteers and the public
- Maintain supportive relationships with vendors, be familiar with their products and practices and promote their success
- Troubleshoot, solve problems and resolve conflicts as presented
- Manage scheduling and communicate logistics with vendors in advance of market attendance
- Coordinate with other staff to recruit and on‑board vendors as needed
- Implement BFM’s vendor policies and procedures
- Become familiar with and assist vendors with compliance regarding laws, regulations and best practices pertaining to sale of their products
- Contribute to the inclusivity of our markets and culture by engaging positive relationships
- Accurately track market tokens, merchandise and vendor payments and reconcile each form of income at the end of the market day;
Cooperates with Markets of Broome on reporting finance records - Track and record vendor attendance, shoppers counts and gross sales data
- Build relationships and maintain professional contact with vendors, neighbors, partners, musicians, sponsors and other market affiliates
- Assist with marketing and promotion of the farmers market by attending neighborhood meetings, distributing flyers and other community relationship building
- Work closely with the BOD to identify possible partnerships and outreach opportunities
- Assist with the posting of interesting, relevant and high quality photos/information to social media outlets that encourage shopper attendance OR oversee Intern’s use of social media
- Curate an exciting and culturally relevant musician program and manage application process for new and returning performers
- Prepare manager report each month to report to BOD
- Commitment to supporting BFM’s pledge to diversity and inclusion practices
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Access to a personal vehicle and personal computer with access to Wi Fi
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented
- 2 years of leadership experience with farmers markets, event management, or related work
- Associates or Bachelors Degree or equivalent professional experience
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Sense of humor
- Knowledge of community food systems
- Resident of Broome County
The Market Manager is a contract and part‑time seasonal employee. The Market Manager receives a stipend of $5,000 paid out in eight checks over the course of the season.
