Job Summary

As the Sustainability Manager for Chartwells at Binghamton University, you will be the liaison and point of contact between dining services and the campus sustainability department for the University. The Sustainability Manager implements Chartwells’ sustainability programs, provides training to all food service staff on sustainability initiatives, monitors and analyzes data, and identifies efficiencies and solutions to further initiatives. In addition, the Sustainability Manager will be a key client partner to align Chartwells’ programs with campus and University initiatives, and will provide resources, training, and data as necessary to help meet sustainability goals and objectives.

This role will have significant community and leadership involvement, including presenting to key stakeholders, developing action plans, identifying community outreach opportunities, and speaking at meetings and symposiums, as needed. The qualified individual will be comfortable speaking in large settings.

In addition, the Sustainability Manager will ensure associates are trained on sustainability initiatives and efficiencies and will be responsible for meeting specific environmental efficiency programming targets and will oversee student sustainability and sourcing internships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and implement initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of food service operations, such as waste reduction, energy conservation, and water efficiency.
  • Evaluate and recommend sustainable sourcing practices for food and packaging materials.
  • Oversee waste management programs, including recycling, composting, and reduction of single‑use items.
  • Implement strategies to minimize food waste within the operations.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees on sustainable practices and their role in achieving sustainability goals.
  • Foster a culture of sustainability through ongoing communication and engagement initiatives.
  • Engage with the local community to promote sustainable practices and build positive relationships.
  • Participate in relevant community events and initiatives that align with the organization's sustainability goals.
  • Report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of sustainability initiatives.
  • Regularly evaluate and adjust strategies based on performance metrics and industry advancements.
  • Manage a team of sustainability interns to assist with student engagement planning, media relations, and environmental reporting.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, business, or related field.
  • Proven experience in implementing sustainability programs, preferably in the food service industry.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations and sustainability best practices.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.
  • Good task management and organizational skills with an ability to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Good analytical skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Competent with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
