Job Description

The Abi‑Ghanem Lab, located at Binghamton University, seeks a Lab Assistant to conduct behavioral, histological and molecular experiments that probe oligodendrocytes and myelin in development, aging, and neurological disease mouse models. The role involves working with transgenic animals, slice cultures, gene manipulation (AAVs), cognitive behavioral testing, molecular biology, immunofluorescent labeling, and rodent models of multiple sclerosis, alcohol use disorder, vascular dementia, multi‑etiology dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Key Responsibilities
  • Become proficient in laboratory techniques and assist in designing experimental protocols.
  • Manage research mouse colonies, including animal husbandry, genotyping, and maintenance of a safe working environment.
  • Perform general lab maintenance, such as purchasing and tracking lab supplies, equipment upkeep, and inventory management.
  • Train and mentor new lab members, and support completion of laboratory experiments.
  • Lead projects as needed and contribute to research publications and presentations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, or a related discipline by June 1, 2026.
  • At least 6 months of full‑ or part‑time experience working with rodent models (experience may be non‑consecutive and need not be paid).
  • Demonstrated quantitative and critical thinking skills through coursework or research experience.
  • Familiarity with cellular and molecular biology and basic chemistry.
  • Willingness and ability to work with mice and rats.
Preferred
  • Experience with rodent models in neuroscience.
  • Familiarity with neuroscience through coursework or research.
  • Expertise or background in myelin biology, dementia, or sex differences.
  • Experience with rodent behavioral testing.
