Instructional Support Assistant (SL-1)

Salary: $45,372 (one year, temporary)

The Abi-Ghanem Lab, located at Binghamton University, is seeking a Lab Assistant to participate in conducting behavioral, histological and molecular experiments probing oligodendrocyte and myelin in development, aging and neurological disease mouse models. Research will use mice to model neuronal development. Our studies utilize a variety of approaches, including transgenic animals, slice cultures, gene manipulation (AAVs), cognitive behavioral testing, molecular biology, immunofluorescent labeling, rodent models of multiple sclerosis, alcohol use disorder, vascular dementia, multi-etiology dementia, and Alzheimer s disease.

Key Responsibilities
  • Proficient in laboratory techniques and manage the research mouse colonies, including animal husbandry and genotyping.
  • Perform general lab maintenance (e.g., purchasing and maintaining inventories of lab supplies, organization, equipment maintenance, and maintaining a safe work environment).
  • Assist with training new lab members and aid in completing lab experiments; technicians may have the opportunity to lead projects.

This is a fully in-person position that may provide opportunities to co-author presentations and publications. It is suitable for candidates on the path to graduate school with interests in neuroscience research.

The position may require some non-traditional hours as dictated by experimental timelines. Details will be defined case-by-case, and a flexible schedule (evenings and weekends) is an asset.

This is a full-time temporary position for one year from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension contingent on performance and funding. Flexible start-date before July 2026.

Requirements
  • Bachelor s degree (or higher) in Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, or a related discipline by June 1, 2026
  • At least 6 months of full/part-time experience working with rodent models (experience need not be consecutive or paid)
  • Demonstrated quantitative and critical thinking skills (through coursework or research experience)
  • Demonstrated familiarity with cellular and molecular biology, and basic chemistry (through coursework or research experience)
  • Willing and able to work with mice and rats

Preferred:

  • Experience working with rodent models in the neuroscience field (experience need not be consecutive nor paid)
  • Demonstrated familiarity with neuroscience (through coursework or research experience)
  • Expertise or background in myelin biology, dementia, and/or sex differences
  • Experience with rodent behavioral testing
