Duties Description

A Trades Specialist (Electrician) is responsible for all electrical work including the planning and laying out of work and the diagnosis of trouble in electrical systems or equipment in an assigned area, on an assigned project or for an entire facility.

Job duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs journeyman level electrical duties.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical trade.
  • Repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and equipment including fixtures, motors, load centers, relays, controls, circuitry, and related equipment in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
  • Locates and diagnoses electrical malfunctions using instruments such as ammeter, voltmeter, and ohmmeter.
  • Plans new or modifies installations consistent with specifications and national electrical code.
  • Plans and lays out work, develops time and material lists for assigned projects.
  • Reads and interprets plans, codes, diagrams, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Tests, adjusts, calibrates, and maintains control equipment, including heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment controls for refrigeration and other systems.
  • Performs maintenance and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment such as bathroom exhaust fans, clothes dryers, sump pumps, and generators.
  • Trains and supervises others.
  • Can climb ladders, work from scaffolding, and use mechanical lifts.
  • Understands and carries out written and oral instructions.
Job Requirements
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the craft or crafts to which assigned.
  • Working knowledge of applicable standards and plumbing and electrical code regulations.
  • Working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the facility governing the activities of State wards.
  • Ability to use tools, machines, equipment, and material of the craft or crafts to which assigned.
  • Ability to train and supervise others.
  • Ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.
  • Understands and carries out written and oral instructions.
Minimum Qualifications

Non-competitive:
Four years of full‑time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson providing training equivalent to a trade apprenticeship or an equivalent combination of experience and training completed through technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; or successful completion of the two‑year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two‑year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association‑Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

  • Successful completion of the traineeship and training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework, with a minimum average of "C" or better. Additionally, completion includes 4,000 hours of on‑the‑job training.
Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee Levels

Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1:
Full‑time permanent service at Grade 12 or below, primarily unskilled or semi‑skilled labor, 18 years or older, high school diploma or GED recognized by the New York State Education Department, proficient in English and math.

Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 2:
Successful completion of a 52‑week probationary period as a Trainee 1; or completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework, 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework, or equivalency exam; or proof of successful completion of equivalent training, 144 hours of electrician trade‑specific instruction, and 2,000 hours of on‑the‑job training. Trainees must maintain a "C" or better average in coursework.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle.
