Electrician – Signal Electrician
This role requires installing, maintaining, and repairing a variety of electrical equipment related to street lights, traffic signals, and electrical components within city-owned buildings and facilities. The electrician/signal electrician works independently or with small work groups, plans projects, creates work schedules, and may supervise teams depending on assignments.
Typical Work Activities- Install, maintain, repair, and replace electric fixtures and cabinets related to traffic signals and street lights.
- Repair and adjust circuit breakers, controls, and regulators by replacing parts and repairing contacts.
- Order parts and maintain records of time and materials used in installations and repairs.
- Assist engineers, master electricians, and carpenters in major works projects.
- Supervise or lead a group of employees on work projects and assignments.
- Operate motor equipment for transporting tools and parts.
- Perform data entry using Cartography software to document work and maintain information on traffic signals, street lights, and other components.
- Plan maintenance and capital projects for street lighting and traffic signal systems.
- Good knowledge of trade practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate and care for power equipment.
- Willingness and ability to plan and supervise projects.
- Proficiency with a personal computer and common office software (word processing, spreadsheets, database such as Carte Graph).
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
- High‑school diploma or equivalency and completion of a five‑year apprenticeship or trade school, plus five years field experience as a journeyman, lineman, or electrician, with at least two years in a supervisory role.
- Associate’s degree in electrical technology from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, plus five years in the field as a journeyman, lineman, or electrician, with two years of supervision.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of the above qualifications.
- Journeyman electrician license in the City of Binghamton, or ability to obtain one within the probationary period.
- Possession of an NYS DMV Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of appointment and maintained throughout the appointment.
- Completion of training through on‑the‑job and online learning within one year of hire to achieve proficiency in traffic signal repairs.
