We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and detail-oriented Senior Staff Accountant to join our growing insurance agency. This position plays a key role in the day-to-day accounting operations of the company and is ideal for someone who enjoys taking ownership of their work, solving problems, and contributing to a collaborative team environment.
The ideal candidate is flexible, proactive, and willing to take on a variety of accounting responsibilities while continuously looking for ways to improve processes and efficiencies.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage the full accounts payable process, including invoice processing and vendor payments.
- Oversee accounts receivable functions, including invoicing, collections, and customer account reconciliation.
- Deposit and accurately record client payments and insurance carrier commission checks.
- Record and reconcile daily bank activity.
- Prepare, review, and post journal entries.
- Perform monthly and year-end general ledger account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Process and reconcile agency bill transactions.
- Reconcile direct bill commission statements and investigate discrepancies.
- Work with insurance carriers and internal teams to resolve billing, commission, and accounting issues.
- Assist with accounting functions related to Applied Epic, Ascend, or other agency management systems (experience preferred but not required).
- Research and resolve accounting discrepancies while identifying opportunities to improve processes and internal controls.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
- Assist with audits, financial reporting, and special accounting projects.
- Support the accounting department with various responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of bookkeeping and/or accounting experience required; insurance agency accounting experience is a strong plus.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger reconciliations.
- Experience with agency bill accounting, direct bill commissions, or insurance accounting is highly desirable.
- Experience with Applied Epic, Ascend, or similar agency management/accounting systems is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with accounting software.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
