Position: ACADEMIC ADVISOR I

Job Title:

Academic Advisor I (T233820)

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an Academic Advisor I for the Collat School of Business. This position will provide timely and concise academic advising to students in the Department of Accounting and Finance.

Overview
  • Understand the history and role of academic advising in higher education.
  • Understand core values and theories relevant to academic advising.
  • Understand various approaches and methods in academic advising.
  • Articulate personal philosophy of advising.
  • Create rapport and maintain basic relationships.
  • Provide guidance on course selection, prerequisites, career planning, and continuing higher education.
  • Proactively identify and support students not meeting academic expectations.
Responsibilities
  • Direct student advising.
  • Case management and documentation.
  • Outreach and student success initiatives.
  • Administrative and operational responsibilities.
  • Collaboration and campus partnerships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and two (2) years of related experience. Work experience does not substitute for education.
  • Two (2) years of related experience in collegiate or high school academic advising.

Preferred skills:

  • Attention to detail.
  • Understanding of academic curriculum requirements to move students toward graduation.
  • Ability to follow and retain instructions.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Experience with various student record systems.
  • Adherence to privacy laws.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cohesive team.
  • Effective interaction with college students.
