The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an Academic Advisor I for the Collat School of Business. This position will provide timely and concise academic advising to students in the Department of Accounting and Finance.
Overview- Understand the history and role of academic advising in higher education.
- Understand core values and theories relevant to academic advising.
- Understand various approaches and methods in academic advising.
- Articulate personal philosophy of advising.
- Create rapport and maintain basic relationships.
- Provide guidance on course selection, prerequisites, career planning, and continuing higher education.
- Proactively identify and support students not meeting academic expectations.
- Direct student advising.
- Case management and documentation.
- Outreach and student success initiatives.
- Administrative and operational responsibilities.
- Collaboration and campus partnerships.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and two (2) years of related experience. Work experience does not substitute for education.
- Two (2) years of related experience in collegiate or high school academic advising.
Preferred skills:
- Attention to detail.
- Understanding of academic curriculum requirements to move students toward graduation.
- Ability to follow and retain instructions.
- Good analytical skills.
- Experience with various student record systems.
- Adherence to privacy laws.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cohesive team.
- Effective interaction with college students.
