Job Goal:
To work with staff, students, and the community to ensure a "high quality"
educational program that implements the school's mission, vision, and strategic goals. To assist
the principal in ensuring that we create an environment that is not only safe and nurturing, but
one with high expectations and accountability for faculty, staff, students, and parents.
Job Description:
Responsibilities:
● Administers educational achievement tests to assess students' levels of competencies and
needs.
● Assesses students' needs in transition and related services.
● Writes IEPs for students with annual goals and schedules annual IEP meetings.
● Coordinates and assists in the development of an IEP designed to meet related services,
educational, and transitional needs of the student through the establishment of goals,
objectives, and timelines.
● Employs a variety of instructional techniques consistent with the individual needs and
capabilities of the students.
● Monitors student participation in regular education programs, by collaborating with
regular education teachers and providing remediation materials upon request.
● Actively participates in Eligibility and Level One Due Process IEP meetings and
completes forms relevant to input on students discussed at the meetings.
● Evaluates the educational program and student progress according to the IEP.
● Attends workshops, conferences, and/or conventions related to special education services
to maintain growth in professional development and meet state certification guidelines.
● Maintains appropriate records according to guidelines and submits reports as required.
● Establishes and maintains a standard of student behavior to achieve a functional learning
atmosphere.
● Maintains open lines of communication with students, support agencies and their parents
concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of the students.
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:
● Demonstrate knowledge of student behavior in his/her area of exceptionality as well as
policies and procedures relevant to program implementation and participation.
● Knowledge to interpret assessment data, group students, and develop methodologies and
strategies conducive to individualized instructional needs.
● Effective skills in oral and written communication to fulfill IEP requirements and
communicate with students, parents, support agencies, and other faculty and staff.
● Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as
needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements
● A valid Alabama teachers' certificate in the area of instructional exceptionality or the
ability to provide documented experience working in the area of special needs education
● Minimum of 1 year of teaching experience
● Understanding and familiarity with computer applications and word-processing functions
● Knowledge of Restorative Justice Principles for Schools
