UAB Heersink School of Medicine is seeking applications for Chair of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics. The Chair reports to the Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean of the School of Medicine and Senior Vice Dean for Research. The role will lead cutting‑edge basic and translational research and provide rigorous, high‑quality education to scientists of tomorrow.
Key Responsibilities- Provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the Department, including representation within the UAB enterprise.
- Develop and implement novel strategies to sustain, grow, and enhance the department’s research and education missions.
- Assess gaps and identify future opportunities and needs in the department.
- Build collaborations and support institutional goals.
- Lead financial stewardship, budget management, and resource allocation.
- Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D.
- Academic rank of Associate or Full Professor.
- Accomplished leader in Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, including enzymology, metabolism, gene expression, protein structure/function, virology, cell differentiation, and molecular pathogenesis.
- Strong track record of academic leadership at a comprehensive public urban research university with an academic medical center.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with diverse leaders and stakeholders.
- Proven experience in financial stewardship, budget management, and resource allocation.
- Vision for building a top‑ranked department.
- Experience in supporting or building a national or international research program.
- Track record of securing external funding.
- Commitment to research and educational missions.
