Culinary Nutrition Educator
The School of Public Health is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable culinary nutrition educator to lead engaging healthy cooking classes hosted through The Samford Wellness Kitchen. The mission of The Samford Wellness Kitchen is to offer hands-on culinary nutrition classes, with a focus on 'Food is Medicine', for community members (adults/teens), Samford students and employees. Run by Samford's Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in the School of Public Health, participants learn from registered dietitians and chefs, garnering skills and knowledge that will help them prepare healthy and delicious meals.
This is an as-needed position, ideal for culinary and nutrition professionals who enjoy teaching a diverse range of ages and skill levels. Educators are scheduled for individual classes based on their availability. Educators are responsible for delivering a high-quality hands-on educational experience focused on nutritious, accessible cooking. Time commitment per class is approximately 4 hours: 1-hour set up, 2.5-hour class, and 30-minute clean up.
Classes are typically scheduled for weekday evenings, after 5pm. On average, 6-8 classes are offered each semester. In the summer, we offer 2 cooking camps for teens, each lasting a whole week (9 am – 1 pm). Compensation is based on experience and qualifications.
- Lead Cooking Classes:
Facilitate a 2.5-hour healthy cooking class, which includes culinary nutrition education, demonstration techniques and guiding participants through recipes. - Coordination of Teaching kitchen assistants:
Direct teaching kitchen assistants in class setup, support during instruction, and cleanup afterward. - Class Preparation:
Arrive prepared with a clear understanding of the class plan, recipes, and necessary materials. - Professional Communication:
Maintain timely and professional communication with the Kitchen Director before and after each class. - Safety & Cleanliness:
Ensure food safety standards are upheld and the kitchen is left clean and organized following completion of class. - Participant Engagement:
Foster a welcoming environment for all participants, encouraging questions and interaction.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in culinary arts, nutrition, and/or food education.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage a group and delegate tasks effectively.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
- Commitment to promoting healthy eating and cooking practices.
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credentialing.
