Special Education Instructional Aide

This position reports to the Principal and Assigned Teacher(s).

Job qualifications include 2 years of college or a college diploma. Knowledge of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics is required. Familiarity with techniques used in controlling and motivating students, English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, routine record keeping, and the general purposes and goals of public education is necessary. Specific subject area content as required in job assignment is also needed.

The job goal is to increase the effectiveness of the teacher and assist with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole.

Performance responsibilities include:

  • Assisting instructional personnel with the development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises.
  • Tutoring students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow-up learning activity as directed.
  • Overseeing and supervising students during classroom activities, in the library, bathroom, PE, lunch, and on field trips. Assisting teacher with emergency drills.
  • Assisting in the development of a variety of instructional materials.
  • Operating and caring for equipment used in classroom instruction and informing the teacher if equipment is not working properly.
  • Assisting teacher in collecting and distributing books and materials for the classroom. Working with bulletin boards and other classroom displays.
  • Performing a variety of regular clerical duties, such as filing, typing, or duplicating materials.
  • Managing classroom behavior in the absence of the teacher. Assisting any substitute teacher in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Alerting the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Maintaining the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  • Following a daily schedule as assigned by the teacher(s) and approved by the principal.
  • Performing other related tasks as needed.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Terms of employment are nine months per school year, 184 days.
