Job Summary:

To provide an educational environment in which special education students succeed academically, socially and physically in accordance with school system philosophy, goals and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Effective interpersonal skills with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of assigned students.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data and to produce/submit required reports.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, assist with student toileting and specific hygiene need (May be required).
  • Ability to transfer students, feed students and provide physical intervention when needed (May be required).
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Assess students needs for transition and related services.
  • Participates in the development of student's individual educational plans (IEPs) as a member of the IEP team.
  • Implement the student's IEP. Schedules and participates in the IEP meetings.
  • Employs a variety of instructional strategies and techniques consistent with the individual needs and capabilities of students.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interest.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies and administrative regulations.
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development and physical health.
  • Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question and investigate.
  • Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Guide and counsel students with adjustments and/or academic problem, or special academic interests.
  • Instruct and monitor students in use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors.
  • Meet with parents or guardians to discuss their children's progress and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs.
  • Prepare and implement remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
  • Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of school programs.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visit by guest speakers or other experiential activities.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Perform administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading.
  • Provide disable students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as the restrooms.
  • Maintain confidentiality as required and appropriate.
  • Model exemplary personal characteristics and demonstrate a high degree of professionalism.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Special Education (K-12, K-6)
  • Valid Alabama teacher certification
  • Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

Salary:
To be determined commensurate with Midfield City Schools Board Approved salary matrix, credentials and experience.

Evaluation:
The performance of this job will be evaluated according to the provisions of the Board policy on personnel evaluation.
