Position: 2026-27 Exceptional Education - Occupational Therapist
Occupational Therapist
Reports To:
Executive Director of Exceptional Education and Principal
Job Goal:
To provide occupational therapy assessment and services as a related service to enhance a student's ability to benefit from and participate in his/her special education program
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Alabama license and National Board Certification in occupational therapy
- Experience in the provision of public school occupational therapy services preferred
- Experience in service to students with a variety of disabilities, including students with multi-disabilities
- Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive devices for students with special needs
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
- Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
- Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
- Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal and local law and the Board may require
Duties And Responsibilities:
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and prioritiesAssists and guides teachers in observing, identifying, and referring students with suspected and identified fine motor impairmentsProvides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of fine motor, visual-motor integration, visual perception, visual analysis, and other areas related to occupational therapyAdministers evaluations, interprets evaluation findings, writes reports, and plans appropriate interventions utilizing the findings of the evaluationsConsults with school personnel to adjust classroom environments, tools, and curriculum to facilitate student performance and participation in school related activitiesParticipates in the development and implementation of IEPsCollaborates with teachers and other school staff members to enable a student to meet IEP goals and objectivesMonitors student performance within the classroomProvides direct services to students either within the classroom, in small groups, or in individual sessionsAssists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devicesAssists teachers in assessing equipment needs, monitoring, and making recommendations regarding instructional equipmentAdapts, designs, orders, and maintains equipment needed by studentsMaintains and monitors records of students served by the instructional support teamComplies with local, state and federal regulations regarding special education records, reports, and servicesProvides information, consultation, and assistance to classroom teachersMaintains frequent and substantive communication with parents regarding students' needs, services, progress, and carryover of fine motor activities in the homeMaintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate mannerProperly cares for equipment and material resources of the school systemCooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local schoolAdheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal and local lawsPerforms other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position.
