Position: 2026-27 Teacher - Exceptional Education (6-12 AAS/Self-Contained)

Reports To:
School Principal
Job Goal:
To provide effective exceptional education services that create optimal educational opportunities for students with disabilities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate with endorsement in special education
- Experience in full range of severity levels and service delivery models (particularly autism)
- Can participate in restraint training and participate in restraint of a student, if needed
- Team leadership experience
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
- Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
- Knowledge of effective strategies for academic and behavior intervention
- Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
- Knowledge of assistive technology devices for students with special needs
- Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
- Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law and the Board may require
Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and prioritiesDemonstrates competent knowledge of the structure of the academic discipline; plans and implements appropriate instruction for each student, integrating individual student goals/objectives into classroom plansAssesses student needs and develops an individual education program (IEP)/504 plan for students with disabilities; monitors and updates IEPs /504 plans as neededImplements developmentally appropriate instructional strategiesTrains and supervises teacher assistants for students with disabilitiesCooperates with other professionals to coordinate services for studentsEmploys effective educational instruction and behavior management techniques which foster good self-concept and independence in learningAssists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devicesAssists with coordination of the local school process for the identification and referral of students for special education servicesParticipates in restraint training and is able to restrain a student, if neededMaintains and monitors records of students served by the instructional support teamServes as a team member in determining student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual program developmentMonitors all evaluation requirements and submits referral/documentation to central officeCollaborates, consults, and/or co-teaches with general education teachers to provide support for students with disabilities in the classroomAssists and cooperates with teachers, counselors, therapists, and other school personnel in the provision of effective educational services to studentsAdministers all school, District, and state-required assessments in accordance with required proceduresFacilitates students' individual and collaborative use of technology to support learningMaintains frequent and substantive communication with parents; involves parents and/or families as active partners in planning and supporting student learningActively participates in collaborative professional learning communities to increase student achievement and grow professional expertiseActively engages in ongoing, continuous professional learningUses and maintains confidential information in accordance with state and federal law and local Board policyPractices safe, responsible, legal, and ethical use of technology following the Hoover City Schools' Acceptable Use AgreementMaintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate mannerProperly cares for equipment and material resources of the school systemCooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local schoolAdheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local lawsPerforms other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position.
