Salary: Certified Salary Schedule 16 (Level 1-4) ($49,080 - $93,876) depending on degree level (recognized by ALSDE)
Location: Various Schools
FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Description

To provide a comprehensive counseling program for all children in the respective elementary school(s). Consult with teachers, parents and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students. Provide support to other elementary educational programs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of educational, personal, social and career plans.
  • Counsel individuals and small groups of children toward social and foundational wellness.
  • Consult with and train teachers, parents and staff regarding children’s needs.
  • Seek opportunities for children with behavioral/social challenges and their parents to receive support through special programs, specialists and outside agencies (if appropriate).
  • Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school.
  • Participate in and help facilitate the intervention team process.
  • Plan and evaluate the counseling program.
  • Establish effective rapport with students.
  • Serve as the principal's designee on committees or teams such as IEP, RtI, CIP, and others.
  • Implement the comprehensive guidance curriculum: conduct classroom guidance activities in each teacher's class and/or systematically conduct developmental counseling groups for each grade level throughout the year; consult with and/or provide resources to teachers to facilitate their instruction of counseling content and to infuse counseling content in the regular educational curriculum.
  • Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of life skills: work with students in acquiring knowledge about and effective use of skills when interacting in the home, academic and peer environments.
  • Counsel individuals and small groups of children toward social and foundational wellness: conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions in systematic response to identified needs of individual or groups of children.
  • Serve as student advocate and avoid role of disciplinarian.
  • Consult with and train teachers, parents and staff regarding student needs: participate in staffing; conduct in-service programs for faculty.
  • Conduct or provide opportunities for parent education program; write articles for parent newsletters, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Valid Alabama Professional Certificate in Education.
  • Master’s Degree or higher in School Counseling from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of satisfactory teaching experience with evidence of significant impact on student achievement.
