Special Education Paraprofessional Required Skills

• High School Diploma or equivalent plus a passing score on paraprofessional certification test, or a Paraprofessional Certificate, or Sixty (60) hours of college credits
• Related experience in the field of education preferred
• Must be physically able to perform job duties as necessary according to the needs of the students
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time

• Maintain order with the students assigned for supervision
• Diaper, bathroom, and perform health tasks as assigned
• Tutor students on lessons determined by the teacher
• Help maintain a positive classroom environment
• Monitor student for health problems if assigned
• Assist teacher with organizational and instructional needs in the classroom
• Assist students in the general education classroom and other settings as assigned
• Maintain accurate records and data regarding students
• Work as a member of the team with the teacher
• Maintain confidentially
• Participate in ongoing professional development
• Supervise students in halls and playgrounds and other unstructured areas as assigned by the teacher
• Conduct student classroom observations using appropriate rubrics
• Assist in the functional assessment process
• Assist in developing appropriate instructional or behavioral materials using audio and video media to reinforce the student’s I.E.P. (i.e. charts, tapes)
• Collect and chart data
• Provide information and feedback to the teacher regarding student progress
• Work well with others
• Perform assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner
• Perform assigned tasks with a high standard of quality
