Job Title – Area Director Supervisor:
Deputy Superintendent of School & Community Job Goals:

  • To provide leadership in the management of leadership, performance, and operations of his or her assigned schools.
  • To assist in the development and implementation of the goals, priorities, and mission of the school system.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Valid Alabama certification in Educational Leadership, administration, and/or supervision.
  • Minimum of five (5) years successful classroom experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years successful administrator experience at the school level.
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002‑457.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to reflect and apply knowledge from current research on best practices for improving student achievement.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate assigned personnel.
  • Ability to employ effective coaching and facilitation skills to lead school teams to plan for and respond to learning across all content areas.
  • Knowledge of school law, Board policies, safety and security procedures, and State Department of Education regulations.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to plan, communicate, and manage data, and to produce/ submit required reports, correspondence, and/or complete tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Physical strength, stamina, dexterity, and acuity to perform essential job functions and responsibilities.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
  • Performance Responsibilities and

    Essential Functions:
  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Develops clear, specific, and ambitious performance targets and evaluates progress of his or her cohort programs and initiatives; and holds parties accountable and helps adjust strategy and approach accordingly to achieve goals laid out by the District leadership, especially the system's strategic plan.
  • Maintains constant contact with schools, spending approximately 80% of his or time in the schools they manage, working with the leadership teams of those schools.
  • Conducts observation of designated personnel and provides follow‑up conferences.
  • Develops, supervises, and evaluates principals in his or her cohort according to the State Department of Education and/or Jefferson County Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
  • Provides principals with constructive feedback, information, resources and assistance as needed.
  • Participates in parent and/or employee conferences as needed.
  • Builds the instructional leadership capacity of principals and school leadership teams with particular focus on pedagogy, data analysis, intervention, and professional development.
  • Collaborates with Central Office departments to provide the appropriate system resources that address the needs of schools.
  • Fosters a vibrant and collaborative professional learning community among administrators across assigned schools.
  • Collaborates with other Area Directors to share best practices.
  • Collaborates with central office and school‑based leadership to develop, implement, and/ or obtain and provide needed resources, services and materials for students in alignment with the district's school turnaround strategy.
  • Monitors progress of initiatives by reviewing documents and work‑in progress; recommend adjustments to project plans as needed. Communicate progress status, changes, needs, etc. in a timely and effective manner to appropriate audiences.
