UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine seeks a Vice Chair for Education. The ideal candidate will be board‑certified in Anesthesiology, eligible to practice medicine in Alabama, and have a proven track record in clinical practice and leadership. Prior experience as a residency program director or fellowship director, and experience in graduate medical education or advanced medical student education, is strongly preferred.
ResponsibilitiesThe vice chair will be responsible for:
- Oversight of the Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Residency training program.
- Support the Program Director in defining roles for Associate Program Directors and Program Coordinators and provide mentorship to develop clear succession plans.
- Assist program personnel in preparing for all regulatory and administrative roles (ACGME, RRC, CLER, SOM GME, etc.) and maintain active involvement with appropriate national societies.
- Assist with residency recruitment and support curriculum development to meet learner needs.
- Oversight of the Assistant Director of Education/Librarian, collaborating with residency and fellowship Program Directors to develop roles and responsibilities while providing mentoring.
- Oversight of all ACGME‑accredited fellowship training programs.
- Mentor fellowship directors and identify junior faculty interested in subspecialty education roles, assisting with succession planning.
- Deliver faculty development related to requirements and best practices and ensure process improvement in under‑performing fellowships.
- Supervise the fellowship program coordinator and administrative staff.
- Oversight of all non‑ACGME fellowship training programs.
- Ensure non‑accredited fellowships meet expectations for accredited programs.
- Oversee establishment of new fellowships and selection of fellowship leadership.
- Oversight of all Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) programs.
- Medical student rotations.
- Student Interest Group in Anesthesiology (SIGA).
- Faculty Development.
- Develop transparent expectations, evaluation, and benefits for teaching faculty.
- Support faculty in developing sound teaching skills.
- Mentor faculty, fellows, and residents interested in educational careers or projects.
- In partnership with the Department Chair and CFO, provide financial oversight of all education programs, including budget management.
- Communication Expectations.
- Hold regular meetings with the Department Chair to discuss progress in education activities.
- Hold regular meetings with the Residency Program Director and Associate Program Directors.
- Meet regularly with each Fellowship Director.
- Licensed physician (M.D. or D.O.).
- Board‑certified in Anesthesiology and eligible to practice medicine in Alabama.
- Track record of clinical achievement.
- Leadership experience in Graduate Medical Education, including experience as a residency or fellowship program director.
- Experience as a leader in medical student education beyond the clerkship director role is acceptable in lieu of graduate medical education experience.
