Position Summary:

The Student Support Services Peer Tutor (SSSPT) provides support services in lab, one‑on‑one, or open classroom settings. Peer Tutors do not deliver instruction; they provide tutorial support for specific content areas and students in accordance with the mission, core values, and purposes of the college. The SSSPT provides tutorial support for program participants and tracks their progress each semester through graduation, supporting retention and graduation.

Local Salary Schedule (L): $10 per hour for up to 19 hours per week. This is a part‑time position.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provides academic assistance to the assigned student, either in a group or individual setting
  • Assists students in achieving a better understanding of a specific subject area and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas
  • Attends periodic training or orientation sessions as required by the director
  • Documents student progress
  • Assists students with the development of study skills necessary for academic success
  • Helps foster positive attitudes toward learning and studying
  • Motivates and supports students’ achievement and success
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with the assigned student(s)
  • Serves as a role model for students receiving services
  • Fosters an inclusive learning environment
  • Has a high level of patience and a sincere desire to share academic successes and abilities with peers
  • Ensures successful performance, retention, and graduation of SSS participants
  • Recruits participants with the potential and motivation for college entry and success
  • Monitors academic progress and contacts faculty and staff throughout the semester as necessary
  • Upholds professional ethical standards that do not breach confidentiality or student relationships
  • Maintains an appropriate work schedule to accommodate participants
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and inviting office environment in which participants feel comfortable
  • Provides data to the Director when requested and in accordance with program requirements
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, an "A" or "B" letter grade in the course to be tutored, second‑semester status, or documented credits from a college or university
  • Must be in good overall standing with the college and receive a recommendation from a faculty and/or staff person
  • Must be enrolled and maintain at least 6 units throughout the entire semester of hire
  • Previous tutoring experience preferred
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills required
  • Computer proficiency

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which includes nights, as needed, to assist with student tutorial needs
  • Willingness to take initiative and commitment to a philosophy of continuous improvement
  • Ability to develop, interpret, and apply policies and procedures; to research and analyze information; and to prepare, present, and review oral and written information and reports
  • Ability to use customer service initiatives for clients and the campus community
