Job DescriptionThe Middle School Band Director is responsible for planning and delivering a comprehensive instrumental music program. The teacher will provide instruction in instrumental performance, music literacy, and ensemble development while fostering musical growth, discipline, and appreciation in alignment with Alabama Course of Study standards.
Duties and Responsibilities- Plan and implement engaging, standards‑based instrumental music instruction
- Teach instrumental techniques, music literacy, rhythm, tone production, and ensemble skills
- Direct and rehearse concert band and other instrumental ensembles
- Provide opportunities for student performances, concerts, and school events
- Prepare students for district assessments, evaluations, and performances
- Organize and conduct rehearsals, sectionals, and group instruction
- Assess and monitor student progress; maintain accurate records
- Establish and maintain a structured, positive rehearsal and classroom environment
- Collaborate with school staff, administrators, and Fine Arts Department personnel
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and participation
- Maintain instruments, equipment, uniforms, and instructional materials
- Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and school activities
- Support district and school initiatives
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Strong knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy and ensemble instruction
- Ability to direct and develop middle school concert bands
- Effective classroom and rehearsal management skills
- Ability to motivate and engage adolescent learners
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Ability to integrate technology into music instruction
- Knowledge of instrument care, maintenance, and inventory procedures
- Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related field from an accredited college or university
- Valid Alabama Class B Professional Educator Certificate in Music (or eligibility to obtain)
- Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and pass required background checks
- Experience teaching middle school band or instrumental music
- Proficiency on one or more band instruments (woodwind, brass, or percussion)
- Experience preparing students for adjudicated performances or assessments
- Strong background in beginning and intermediate instrumental instruction
