Position: Special Education Teacher/Self-Contained (TIS)
POSITION TITLE:

Special Education Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

* Valid certification in special education

* Such alternatives or additional qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

SUPERVISES:

Students and assigned personnel

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, and goals.

* Assesses student needs and develops an individual education program (IEP)/504 plan for students with disabilities; monitors and updates IEPs/504 plans as needed.

* Implements developmentally appropriate instructional strategies.

* Trains and supervises teacher assistants for students with disabilities.

* Cooperates with other professionals to coordinate services for students.

* Assists teachers with the implementation of appropriate classroom accommodations/modifications.

* Assists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devices.

* Assists with the coordination of the local school process for the identification and referral of students for special education services.

* Maintains/monitors records of students served by the instructional support team.

* Serves as a team member in determining student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual program development.

* Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.

* Complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding Special Education records, reports, and services.

* Cooperates with teachers, counselors, therapists, and other school personnel in the provision of effective educational services to students.

* Maintains frequent and substantive communication with parents.

* Cooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local school/system.

* Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws.

* Has knowledge of appropriate assessment and testing techniques of students with multiple disabilities. Develops service delivery models, which match state and local objectives in accordance with student needs.

* Provides services that may include technical/medical interventions, as well as developmentally appropriate learning activities.

* Consults with classroom teachers, school personnel, service providers, and medical personnel in planning, delivering, and evaluating interventions that positively impact the developmental needs of the student.

* Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.

* Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication, organization, and collaborative skills.

* Has the ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as lifting and carrying children.

* Participates in transition planning and preparation for adult life experiences.

* Implements appropriate environment and behavior management strategies.

* Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

EVALUATION:

Nine-month position in accordance with the Board's salary schedule.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Tarrant city Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.

This is an exempt position.
