Executive Director of Academics

Job Goals:

To provide the strategic direction and operational oversight necessary to supervise school leaders, align curriculum, and drive continuous improvement to ensure equitable, high-level student achievement district-wide.

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Alabama Professional Leadership Certificate in instructional leadership, supervision or administration.

Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, or related field.

Minimum of:

Five (5) years successful teaching experience; and
Five (5) years successful building-level administrative experience as a principal; and
Central office leadership experience preferred.

Demonstrated record of improving student achievement and school performance.

Experience supervising and evaluating school administrators and instructional leaders.

Strong knowledge of curriculum development, instructional leadership, assessment systems, school improvement processes, and educational accountability.

Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex educational environment.

Experience leading district-wide instructional initiatives or school turnaround efforts.

Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), instructional technology integration, and continuous improvement frameworks.

Experience managing large teams and cross-departmental collaboration.

Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. .

Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.

Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.

Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

Performance Responsibilities and

Essential Functions:

Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the district's academic vision, instructional priorities, and strategic plan.

Leads district-wide efforts to improve student achievement, instructional effectiveness, graduation rates, and college/career readiness outcomes.

Collaborates with the Superintendent and executive leadership team to establish measurable academic goals and monitor progress toward district priorities.

Develops and communicates high expectations for teaching, learning, leadership, and student support across all schools.

Uses data-driven decision-making to identify district needs, monitor performance trends, and implement targeted improvement strategies.

Evaluates the effectiveness of principals and area directors through regular performance monitoring, coaching, and feedback.

Builds leadership capacity among principals and school administrators through mentoring, professional learning, and leadership development initiatives.

Oversees school improvement planning and ensures accountability for academic performance and operational effectiveness.

Conducts school visits and instructional walkthroughs to monitor instructional quality, student engagement, and implementation of district initiatives.

Supports principals in addressing school culture, climate, discipline, staffing, instructional concerns, and stakeholder engagement.

Ensures consistent implementation of high-quality instructional practices across all schools.

Leads district assessment systems and analyzes academic performance data to guide instructional improvement efforts.

Ensures alignment among curriculum, instruction, intervention programs, assessments, and professional learning.

Oversees district professional development programs for teachers, administrators, and instructional staff.

Ensures professional learning opportunities are aligned with district initiatives and student achievement goals.

Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, board policies, accreditation requirements, and accountability standards related to academics and instruction.

Assists in the development and oversight of departmental budgets and allocation of academic resources.

Oversees implementation of district academic policies, procedures, and instructional expectations.

Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.

Acts in a professional and ethical manner and adheres to professional standards at all times.

Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.

Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.

Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.

Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
