Paraeducators work in educational settings with students who have diverse abilities and learning styles, including students with disabilities.

Minimum requirements:

+ Must have at least a High School education or equivalent

+ Must be 18 years of age to work in Elementary and Middle Schools

+ Must be 21 years of age to work in High Schools

+ Available for daily work

+ Ability to lift or move classroom materials and supplies and assist with student support activities, with or without reasonable accommodation.

+ Ability to follow oral and written directions and build positive working relationships with students and school staff.

Responsibilities:

+ Collaborate with teachers and school support staff to create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe classroom environment.

+ Provide one-on-one, small-group, or classroom support to students with diverse learning needs under the direction and supervision of school or district professionals.

+ Assist students with participating in teacher-planned lessons, activities, routines, and other school experiences.

+ Support students' social and emotional development by encouraging positive peer interactions and modeling inclusive behaviors.

+ Respect student privacy and maintain confidentiality regarding students and school or district personnel.

+ Follow school or district direction regarding student health, restroom access, personal hygiene support, and other student needs. Personal hygiene support may be provided only after required training and under the direct supervision of school or district personnel.

+ Use physical contact only when age-appropriate, situationally appropriate, permitted by Kelly Education policy, and consistent with required training, school or district direction, and the student's IEP.

+ Complete Kelly Education and applicable school or district training before beginning assigned work.

Paraeducators work under the direction and supervision of school or district employees. The assigned teacher or designated school professional is responsible for curriculum, lesson planning, instructional decisions, student evaluation, goals and objectives, classroom supervision, and communication with parents or guardians.

Paraeducators do not serve as substitute teachers; prepare lesson plans; independently provide direct instruction in place of a teacher; introduce new content; develop curriculum; assign grades; make final pass/fail decisions; administer medication; diagnose illness or injury; transport students; or provide sole supervision of students, playgrounds, or student release to transportation.

A full-time para educator may also be referred to as paraprofessional, 1:1 aide, education technician, teacher aide, instructional assistant, classroom assistant, education assistant, learning support assistant, or teaching assistant.
