Overview
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has an early‑career Mechanical Engineering position for its Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) group. The role involves developing viable mechanical system and component designs for space payloads, creating detailed engineering documents and CAD drawings, reviewing designs, communicating technical information, and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineers on high‑reliability integrated systems.
EITD supports specialized research instruments for ground and microgravity experiments, delivering solutions from concept through deployment and operational support. Engineers handle design, development, and commercialization of hardware and software for aeronautic and life sciences industries.
Responsibilities- Develop viable mechanical system and component designs based on project requirements and specifications.
- Assist in development, manufacture, maintenance, sustainment, and operational support of payload systems for space applications.
- Create detailed engineering documents and CAD drawings for fabrication and assembly of complex hardware.
- Review and check engineering drawings produced by others for adherence to technical specifications and requirements.
- Demonstrate effective technical communication to guide fabrication and assembly efforts.
- Work closely with engineers of other disciplines to develop high‑reliability integrated systems.
- Support meetings, teleconferences, and travel as required by projects.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and four (4) years of related experience required.
- Ability to use engineering and documentation/analysis software, MS Word, and Excel.

Annual Salary: $67,070 - $108,990
