Overview
Position Summary The Project Engineer acts as the engineering manager for design activities for the Hydro Modernization program. Projects include modernization and maintenance (retrofits) in the Georgia Power (GPC) and Alabama Power (APC) Hydro river systems. This role is responsible for managing the engineering scope, budgets, schedules, and serves as the main point of contact for engineering deliverables to the project manager.
The Project Engineer also works with design disciplines to ensure adequate and qualified resources are assigned to the project, anticipates changes in project scope, budget, and schedule requirements, and develops/communicates mitigation plans for those changes. They identify and communicate lessons learned and facilitate resolving engineering and vendor-related issues. This position is required to maintain accurate project records in a variety of project management applications.
and Relocation
- Up to 50% travel should be expected within the Southern Company footprint. Travel frequency will be dictated by the specific project(s) supported.
- Some relocation assistance may be available for this position if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Atlanta or Birmingham area.
- B.S. in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus.
- 5+ years of experience in design or project management related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for heavy industrial projects, or electric utility generation and/or transmission systems.
- Formal or informal experience in a lead role directing activities of direct reports or project team members.
- Experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Power plant operations or prior assignments within a power plant
- Plant facility operations (Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil & Gas, etc.)
- Distribution or transmission or prior assignments within these areas
- Hydro plants or projects is preferred
- Budget/schedule management
- Understanding of project change control
- Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions
- Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes.
- Strong management and organization skills.
- Ability to build a strong, diverse team.
- Ability to balance customer satisfaction priorities with project constraints.
- Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies.
