JOB SUMMARY: The City of Birmingham is seeking well-qualified Senior Engineering Drafters to produce detailed plans, blueprints, and drawings that represent infrastructure systems (e.g., sewers, roads, architecture, and structural elements) using advanced computer-assisted drafting software (such as AutoCAD and Carlson) or manual techniques. These drawings and plans support civil engineering and construction projects and public dissemination of information. Senior Engineering Drafters work closely with Engineers, Architects, Contractors, and other professionals to review designs, make necessary modifications, and ensure compliance with project specifications and professional standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Option A- Driver’s license.
- Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or technical school in Drafting, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- Work experience using computer-aided drawing software (AutoCAD, Micro Station, InRoads, Carlson, etc.) for architectural or civil design projects and mapping.
- Driver’s license.
- Experience working on construction projects (e.g., buildings, highways, utilities, bridges) as a surveyor, survey crew member, construction/engineering inspector, or drafter/designer.
- Work experience using computer-aided drawing software (AutoCAD, Micro Station, InRoads, Carlson, etc.) for architectural or civil design projects and mapping.
- Experience using Carlson and/or AutoCAD to produce drawings/plans.
- Experience working on a surveying crew.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings.
JOB DUTIES:
- Assists in managing civil engineering and/or construction projects by conducting on-site inspections, reviewing work of crews and contractors, and interacting with the public.
- Estimates construction costs and quantities of materials needed for plans and projects by reviewing plans and drawings, calculating areas, volumes, and slopes, and determining the types of materials that should be used.
- Maintains hard-copy and computer‑based filing systems by organizing hard copies and electronic copies of maps and drawings to ensure data is properly documented and easy to access.
- Produces maps and drawings using drafting tools and software to accurately depict county infrastructure for construction/maintenance purposes and general documentation.
- Produces plans, blueprints, and drawings to assist with planning civil engineering and construction projects.
- Provides customer service by researching and investigating existing structures, maps, and documents to communicate accurate information to colleagues, engineers, architects, supervisors, consultants, and the general public.
Job is primarily sedentary involving long periods of sitting. Light to moderate physical exertion may be required, including lifting, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or twisting. Occasional lifting of items weighing up to 50 pounds may be necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting and outdoors during field visits. Incumbents may need to enter properties, construction sites, residences, and buildings under various stages of construction and repair. Exposure to inclement weather (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind) may occur.
