Substation Physical Designer

Job Title: Substation Physical Designer
Location: Birmingham, AL
Duration: 3+ years

Position Overview:
Responsible for creating 2D/3D design drawings for Client Transmission & Distribution substations. Work includes developing physical layouts, specifying materials, supporting design standards, and coordinating with engineers, vendors, and field teams. Site visits and occasional overnight travel (~25%) required.

Key Responsibilities:

• Produce 2D/3D substation designs: foundations, grounding, conduits, switch gear, substation layouts, switch houses, electrical bus.
• Specify, order, and manage materials for design packages.
• Transmit drawings and specifications using engineering transmittal systems.
• Collaborate with engineers, construction, project management, and maintenance teams.
• Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and internal committees to resolve equipment/material issues.
• Support construction via site visits (pre-, during, post-construction).

Qualifications:
Education:

• Bachelor’s in Engineering/Engineering Technology, or
• Associate + 5 yrs relevant experience, or
• High school + 8 yrs relevant experience

Experience / Skills:

• Knowledge of electrical substation equipment and operations (preferred).
• Familiarity with transmission/distribution systems, utility grid operations, and basic power system theory.
• Understanding of NESC, NEC, OSHA standards (preferred).
• Ability to create designs from single/three-line diagrams.
• Proficiency in 2D/3D modeling: SDS Inventor, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, or Autodesk 3D (P4A).
• Experience with document management, estimating, Primavera P6, progress reporting (preferred).
• Strong communication, problem-solving, teamwork, mentoring, and organizational skills.
• Ability to visualize 3D layouts and spatial connections of equipment/materials.
