Position: Substation Physical Designer  # 26-12921

Duration: 36 Months

Must be willing to travel approximately 25% and able to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with reliable internet service. Some overnight travel will be required.

Job Responsibilities
  • Create design drawings in 2D or 3D for Transmission and Distribution electrical substations, supporting client design criteria and standardization efforts.
  • Produce engineering drawings using AutoCAD, Auto Desk 3D Inventor, or Autodesk Map 3D (P4A), generate specifications and material requirements for substation projects with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and cost.
  • Create and modify scaled 2D drawings and 3D models of physical substation components, including foundation layouts, grounding layouts, conduit layouts, switch gear assembly layouts, substation layouts, switch house layouts, and electrical bus design.
  • Specify and order material for substation design packages, including stock, non‑stock, and shop‑fabricated material.
  • Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.
  • Coordinate and communicate with engineers and other departments involved in substation design.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and client committee members to resolve equipment and material issues.
  • Provide support to the OPCO’s substation construction, field services, project management, and substation maintenance teams.
  • Conduct site visits for pre‑construction meetings, construction, and post‑construction reviews.
  • Work on location in Birmingham, AL.
Experience
  • Strong understanding of electrical substation equipment.
  • Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility.
  • Good understanding of utility electric grid operations.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory.
  • Strong understanding of the National Electrical Safety Code, National Electrical Code, and OSHA safe operating practices.
  • Ability to create electrical substation physical drawings from a single‑line or three‑line diagram.
  • Ability to create/manipulate 2D drawings and 3D models for electrical substations.
  • Experience using 3D modeling software (SDS Inventor, Autodesk Inventor, or Autodesk 3D (P4A)).
  • AutoCAD training or experience.
  • Experience working with document management and estimating systems.
  • Experience using Primavera (P6) or progress reporting software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products is required.

  • Accurate entry of weekly time and prompt processing of business expense receipts.
  • Ability to envision equipment/materials and their spatial relationships within a three‑dimensional space.
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Associate degree with at least 5 years of related industry experience.
  • High school diploma with at least 8 years of significant related industry experience.
