Vulcan Materials, the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates and a major producer of aggregates-based construction materials, is seeking a Senior Structural Design Engineer to join our team in Birmingham, Alabama. As a Senior Structural Design Engineer, you will play a key role in driving capital projects that support our division’s engineering strategy. You will be responsible for end-to-end project management — from concept and design through cost control, construction, and successful commissioning.

Responsibilities
  • Manage Design:
    Create 3D models and 2D blueprints using CAD or BIM software (AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks, etc.), detailing joints and connections, and determining the exact size of beams, columns, and foundations.
  • Inspect:
    Provide field supervision/inspection services on construction projects and perform post-project review to ensure key objectives, cost/performance improvements, and rate of return are achieved.
  • Prepare Bid Packages:
    Prepare bid packages for construction and manage construction contracts.
  • Provide Updates:
    Provide project updates on a regular frequency to various stakeholders about strategy, adjustments, and progress.
  • Represent the Company:
    Represent the company to industry associations, government officials, and public agencies.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    Other duties as assigned.
  • Travel:
    Varies based on projects up to 20%.
Qualifications
  • Safety-Oriented:
    Sets a safety tone for all activities and upholds the highest standards for protecting people and the environment.
  • Education:

    BS degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering. Other Engineering degrees considered with substantial civil/mechanical/project experience.
  • License: PE license is preferred. Candidates pursuing a PE license will be strongly considered.
  • Experience:

    7+ years of design experience in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong familiarity with project management and engineering software tools, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Experience using drafting software to produce detailed plans, models, and blueprints for Industrial Projects (Auto Cad, Inventor, Solid Works, etc.).
  • Experience supporting projects from concept to completion. Knowledge of concrete and steel design, building codes, and construction practices is desired.
