TRANSMISSION LINE PROJECTION ENGINEER
This job posting is for a Transmission Line Projection Engineer position in the Alabama Power Company Transmission Line Services Organization. The position will be located in the Alabama Power Corporate HQ office in Birmingham, AL. Under direct supervision the successful candidate will follow prescribed procedures to route transmission lines, prepare survey requests, and submit right‑of‑way acquisition requests. The candidate must also be willing and capable of providing court testimony for transmission line route eminent domain cases.
JOBDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Become knowledgeable of the processes at Alabama Power Company related to the planning, routing, survey, design, construction, and maintenance of high‑voltage transmission lines.
- Understand the criteria used to design and construct high‑voltage transmission lines.
- Be proficient in the use of all software applications used in the routing of high‑voltage transmission lines (PLS‑CADD, TSMART, Arc Map, and other GIS tools).
- Know the various internal departments and their activities that are involved in planning, routing, survey, design, construction, and maintenance of high‑voltage transmission lines.
- Provide feedback to project management and other stakeholders on the feasibility of transmission line projects.
- Develop skills necessary to defend Alabama Power Company’s position on transmission line routing decisions, including court testimony.
- Provide engineering support to the encroachment team.
Education Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering from an ABET‑accredited college/university (civil, mechanical, or electrical preferred).
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in transmission line design, construction, and/or maintenance work (preferred).
- Professional Engineering license (preferred), or the ability to obtain a P.E. license within 2 years (required).
- Understanding of transmission right‑of‑way and associated rights (preferred).
- Technical aptitude to solve civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering problems related to HVTL design and construction.
- Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software and to adapt quickly to HVTL application and GIS software.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to build working relationships with peers, internal customers, and the general public.
- Ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Written and verbal communication skills sufficient to communicate effectively in a team environment and with external stakeholders.
