A mechanical estimator analyzes construction blueprints and specifications to calculate the total cost of materials, labor, and equipment for HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems. They prepare detailed, competitive bids and conceptual budgets, ensuring projects are profitable and completed within budget. Key duties include quantity takeoffs, subcontractor solicitation, and vendor negotiations.

Core Responsibilities
  • Blueprint Analysis: Thoroughly review 2D/3D project drawings, specifications, and contract documents to determine project scope.
  • Quantity Takeoffs: Perform accurate takeoffs for HVAC, piping, and plumbing materials, using software to measure material needs.
  • Cost Estimation: Calculate comprehensive, itemized labor and material costs, adjusting for risk, complexity, and market labor rates.
  • Subcontractor & Vendor Management: Solicit, receive, and evaluate quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring complete scope coverage.
  • Bid Preparation: Prepare final bids, proposals, and cost breakdown (including inclusions/exclusions) for project owners and general contractors.
  • Site Visits: Visit job sites to evaluate existing conditions that could affect project costs.
  • Value Engineering: Propose alternative materials or design modifications to reduce costs without compromising quality.
  • Contruction Bid and Management: Ability to search, engage, and execute Bid opportunities solicited from multiple Bid Board and Project Management Service Platforms.
  • Job Cost Analysis: Routinely performs post project Job Cost Analysis reports to ensure accuracy of estimated costs vs. actual costs.
Required

Skills and Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent field experience.
  • Experience: 3–10+ years in mechanical construction estimating (HVAC/Plumbing/Piping). (7-10+ years Experience with Commercial or Industrial Mechanical Contruction estimating (HVAC, Plumbing, Refrigeration, Process Piping)
  • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in estimating software (e.g., STACK, Blue Beam, Trimble Auto Bid, etc.), MS Office (especially Excel), and BIM/CAD viewing software.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of building codes, construction methods, and material pricing trends.
  • Soft Skills: High attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to meet strict bid deadlines. Self Motivated
Typical Qualifications & Certifications
  • Certifications: LEED AP, American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE), or ASHRAE membership. (not required but would be a bonus)
  • Skills: Experience with conceptual budgeting and risk analysis. Proficient operating AutoCAD Software. Experience utilizing AI Estimation Platforms and techniques
