Job OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Senior Product Evaluation Engineer to join our team in Birmingham, AL. This role focuses on evaluating innovative construction products, materials, and assemblies to determine compliance with applicable building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in civil, structural, mechanical, or architectural engineering, along with expertise in technical evaluations, engineering documentation, product testing, construction materials, and code compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Review and evaluate technical documentation, engineering calculations, test reports, drawings, specifications, and quality documentation to determine product compliance.
- Prepare detailed engineering evaluation reports and product listings documenting compliance with applicable building codes and standards.
- Lead technical reviews and ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with regulatory requirements.
- Evaluate innovative construction materials and technologies as alternatives to established building code requirements.
- Manage engineering projects, including timelines, resources, and deliverables.
- Collaborate with clients, engineers, building officials, and internal teams throughout the evaluation process.
- Provide technical guidance and support during application and project review activities.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, accreditation requirements, and quality management systems.
- Represent the organization at conferences, industry events, technical committees, and professional meetings.
- Participate in standards development activities and evaluation criteria discussions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Experience with product evaluations, construction materials, building code compliance, testing, certification, inspections, or related engineering fields.
- Engineering registration required (EIT required; PE License strongly preferred).
- Strong understanding of building codes, industry standards, and evaluation criteria.
- Ability to interpret architectural and structural drawings, technical specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Experience preparing technical reports and engineering documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Master’s degree in Engineering or related discipline.
- Experience with construction product testing, certification, or compliance programs.
- Knowledge of quality management systems and accreditation requirements.
- Experience working with ANSI standards or similar regulatory frameworks.
- Background in construction materials and product performance evaluations.
- Ability to travel up to 25% nationally for meetings, conferences, and industry events.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
