This role offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of civil engineering projects across industrial, commercial, education, residential, and municipal sectors. As an early-career civil engineer, you will support the design, permitting, and delivery of site development and infrastructure projects while receiving hands-on training and mentorship from experienced engineers. You will contribute to technical documents, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and help ensure successful project execution from planning through construction.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and permitting of site development and infrastructure projects across industrial, commercial, education, residential, and municipal sectors.
- Create and refine site plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Apply knowledge of grading and drainage to support site development and infrastructure design.
- Use AutoCAD Civil 3D and hydrology modeling software to produce engineering drawings, plans, and related documents.
- Prepare technical reports, memorandums, and supporting documentation under the supervision of experienced engineers.
- Collaborate closely with clients, architects, contractors, and government agencies to support project coordination and approvals.
- Support project managers with day-to-day project tasks, including scheduling, documentation, and communication.
- Assist in overseeing construction activities, including reviewing plans, tracking progress, and helping address field issues as they arise.
- Participate in mentorship and training activities to build technical, professional, and project management skills.
- Contribute to a culture of ownership, collaboration, and community engagement within the project team.
- Travel to project sites and meetings as needed to support design, coordination, and construction activities.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT or EI) certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months.
- Fundamental understanding of civil engineering principles related to site planning, infrastructure, grading, and drainage.
- Ability to perform the creation of site plans in Civil 3D or similar design tools, or the aptitude and willingness to develop this skill.
- Knowledge of grading and drainage concepts in site development and their application in design.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and external partners.
- Solid problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze issues and contribute to practical engineering solutions.
- Attention to detail and a proactive mindset in both design tasks and project coordination.
- Collaborative spirit and desire to grow within a team-oriented environment.
- Willingness to travel for work as needed and possession of a valid driver's license.
- Genuine passion for site planning, infrastructure, and contributing to community improvement through engineering work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D is preferred and considered a plus; training and support will be provided to build proficiency.
- Familiarity with hydrology modeling software or related tools used in drainage and stormwater design is beneficial.
- Interest in preparing technical reports, memorandums, and supporting documentation for engineering projects.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with a strong sense of urgency and ownership.
- Ability to build strong working relationships within a small team and with project stakeholders.
- Motivation to seek mentorship, accept feedback, and continuously develop technical and professional skills.
- Enthusiasm for working on diverse, impactful projects that support local communities and various market sectors.
Work Environment
You will work in a small, close-knit office in north Birmingham with a team of no more than 10 people, including ownership present on a day-to-day basis. Pay and Benefits
