BESS Engineer/Analyst (SPC Renewable Energy O&M) Work Location, Schedule, and Travel
- Preferred location:
Energy Center in Birmingham, AL. - Hybrid work schedule: 4 days in‑office, 1 day telecommute (subject to change).
- Relocation assistance offered for candidates not within a reasonable commute.
- Overnight travel required to renewable facilities across the U.S. (primarily California and other states).
The BESS Engineer/Analyst is a critical role within Southern Power, supporting the operational, technical, commercial, and contractual performance of utility‑scale BESS facilities. The position involves engagement across asset management, compliance, commercial operations, OEMs, and service providers.
Position QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology (highly preferred).
Experience – Required
- Experience in power plant operations and maintenance, project engineering, or asset management – preferably in renewables.
- Project management skills (scope, schedule, and budget).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Experience – Preferred
- Contract management.
- Managing capital and O&M budgets.
- Usage of asset management software such as Maximo.
- Interpretation of operational data (PI or OIS experience a plus).
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings (P&, single lines, etc.).
- Developing and communicating KPIs to stakeholders.
- Basic understanding of plant control systems (SCADA, PLC, DCS, etc.).
- Managing multiple medium‑to‑large scale projects.
Other Relevant Experience
- Power plant design and construction.
- Generation development.
- Utility system planning.
- Support SPC O&M strategy for current and future BESS facilities.
- Manage service agreements and contracts (LTSAs, PPAs, BESAs, etc.).
- Optimize fleet performance through interpretation of operational data and service logs.
- Develop status reports and presentations for management and stakeholders.
- Create and maintain capital and O&M budgets to optimize net income.
- Implement asset management strategies to improve data entry, record retention, and objective tracking.
- Ensure compliance and regulatory requirements are met.
- Coordinate site visits to renewable facilities for internal and external stakeholders.
- Attend conferences to build relationships with industry peers and OEMs.
- Communicate effectively with other SPC departments concerning BESS operations.
- Support due diligence of asset acquisitions and new development projects.
