In this role, you’ll be challenged to take on work that upholds our guiding principle and drives Waverly Advisors forward. We hope you’ll grow as a person and leader in your field and transform those around you as well.

Waverly Advisors is seeking an experienced Senior Estate & Tax Planning Consultant to join our growing, multi-state RIA, with a strong preference for candidates based in Birmingham, AL. This role serves as a senior subject-matter expert in estate and transfer tax planning, partnering closely with Wealth Advisors, clients, CPAs, and estate planning attorneys to design and implement sophisticated, tax-efficient estate planning strategies.

The position emphasizes strategic analysis, planning design, and coordination and does not involve the provision of legal advice.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and document estate planning strategies, including lifetime gifting, trust‑based planning, charitable planning, and wealth transfer techniques.
  • Model estate and transfer tax outcomes under various planning scenarios and clearly communicate results to clients and advisors.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of complex estate planning documents to confirm they reflect intended planning and tax objectives.
  • Translate client intent into clear strategy summaries and implementation guidance for estate planning attorneys and tax professionals.
  • Lead estate and tax planning discussions in client meetings alongside Wealth Advisors.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource for advisors and planning staff on estate and transfer tax matters.
  • Collaborate closely with CPAs and estate planning attorneys to ensure accurate and efficient implementation of planning strategies.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior estate planning associates and contribute to the development of best practices and workflows.
  • Stay current on federal and state estate, gift, and GST tax law developments and emerging planning techniques.
Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7–10+ years of experience in estate planning, tax planning, or wealth management, with significant exposure to high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients.
  • Deep understanding of federal estate, gift, and GST tax regimes and common estate planning strategies used to minimize estate taxes.
  • Experience working in or closely with an RIA, CPA firm, trust company, or estate planning-focused advisory practice.
  • Strong analytical, modeling, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax and estate concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with advisors, attorneys, and tax professionals.
  • Experience with estate and tax planning software.
Travel
  • Minimal travel
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision coverage to support your overall well being.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with match and profit sharing to help you invest in your future.
  • Twelve paid holidays each year.
  • An extra vacation day during your birthday week—so you can celebrate you!
  • Responsible Time Off Policy giving flexibility without annual PTO limits, while balancing team responsibilities and business needs.
  • Paid sabbatical program:
Enjoy four consecutive weeks of paid time off after seven years of service.
