Deputy Sheriff – Judicial Protection Services
The Deputy Sheriff – Judicial Protection Services, provides safety and well-being of the general public, deters criminal activity within the courthouse, enforces all laws, statutes, codes, ordinances, and regulations, and performs a variety of general law enforcement functions consisting of patrol, court services, investigations, arrest, apprehension, supervision of offenders and special details or specific assignments within the assigned division. When assigned to Courthouse Security, this position assists with the day-to-day operations of all Baldwin County Courthouses, ensuring the Courthouses are secure.
Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug screen. JOB LOCATIONS Courthouses located in Baldwin County and surrounding areas WORKING CONDITIONS The position may involve exposure to and require the officer to function in the presence of the following: inclement weather, to include extreme heat/cold, rain, ice, wind, etc.; light conditions associated with day and night;
fire, smoke, chemical leaks/spills – as close proximity as necessary to provide emergency services; personal danger, including but not limited to armed and/or dangerous persons, and animals, persons and/or articles with contagious/communicable diseases, hazards associated with driving, traffic control and working in and around traffic.
- Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
- Prevents/discovers commission of crime; apprehends, arrests and processes criminals, fugitives and offenders; writes citations.
- Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, lost or missing persons searches, public service duties.
- Conducts preliminary investigations; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses and takes statements; gathers information and evidence; secures crime scenes.
- Inspects premises of buildings/properties to detect suspicious conditions.
- Creates/maintains positive public relations with the general public
- Performs various court-related functions as assigned (e.g., serves warrants, subpoenas, and civil process documents; performs court security functions; monitors/supervises offenders etc.)
- Provides assistance and back up support to other deputies as necessary; substitutes for co-workers in their absence; performs flexible unit assignments as needed in emergency response; provides emergency response on a twenty-four-hour basis as needed.
- Inspects and maintains assigned vehicle, uniform, issued equipment, weapons, etc.
- Confers with supervisors, staff, deputies, and others as necessary to obtain information or resolve problems; contacts command/supervisory personnel by radio, telephone, voice mail, etc., for emergency response and critical incident communications.
- Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
- Prepares reports, logs, citations, forms and other documentations; maintain files, logs and records; performs other clerical duties.
- Receives various documentations; reviews, processes, responds, forwards, maintains, and or takes other action as appropriate.
- Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Monitors the entrance of the Courthouse doors to prevent contraband from entering the Courthouse. Ensures no weapons enter the courthouse as well.
- Prepares the Courthouse for opening by conducting a patrol of the facility and for closing by ensuring that the facility is secured to prevent unauthorized entry after hours.
- Operates security scanning.
- Monitors 2-way radio traffic for internal duress alarms.
- Monitors inmate movement outside of courthouse, through the hallways, and holding cell.
- Tracks keycard access and issuance to court facilities.
- Assists public as needed.
