Municipal Court Probation Officer II
The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified Municipal Court Probation Officer II responsible for conducting evaluations, recommending referrals and implementing and overseeing court-ordered probation activities for adult offenders. Employees in this job class manage cases and supervise clients ordered to probation by maintaining contact with offenders to ensure compliance with court orders, attending court hearings, preparing various documentation, developing relationships with community resources, and attending professional development events.
In addition, incumbents are also required to obtain a Court Referral Officer certification. Work is performed in an office and courtroom setting, and involves frequent use of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word). Employees in this job class do not have permanent supervisory responsibilities and work under the direct supervision of the Court Administrator, Municipal Court Probation Administrator, Senior Probation Officer, presiding judge, and general direction of the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts.
Compensation and benefits include competitive pay and comprehensive benefits packages to include medical and dental insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plan (pension), generous paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, and more. The pay range for this job is $49,753 - $77,188.
Minimum qualifications required for employment consideration for this position include:
- Driver's license.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Experience providing case management (e.g., probation, parole, medical, social work).
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- No felony convictions or misdemeanors of moral turpitude including but not limited to domestic violence or theft.
- Ability to obtain a Court Referral Officer (CRO) certification within one year of employment (

Typical job duties include:
- Performing administrative tasks such as documentation, maintaining information files, and processing paperwork to ensure files are accurate.
- Developing personalized case management plans by recommending treatment referrals, community-based referrals, and new probation orders to help probationers succeed.
- Preparing case recommendations for the judge by attending court sessions/hearings, preparing reports, and providing compliance updates on probationers to help the judge make informed decisions about the probationer's case.
- Completing intake procedures by reviewing probationers' background information, interviewing probationers, and assessing risk and needs to gather information about the probationer.
- Serving as a liaison for the department by developing relationships, attending meetings, communicating with courts, and educating the community to coordinate services and resources.
- Monitoring probationers through gathering information relevant to cases and communicating with associated departments/agencies to help ensure compliance with court orders.
- Engaging in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
The job is primarily sedentary, involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. Work is conducted both indoors in office settings as well as courtroom settings. Work involves the use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, phone, copier, etc. Employees may be exposed to bodily fluids such as urine.
