SummaryThis position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of the Birmingham - AL Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center located in Birmingham - Alabama.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 09/30/2026. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The screening process will evaluate applicants against the prescribed screen‑out element and, if eligible, against the remaining job elements. All US citizens have direct hire authority for this position. Physical requirements include continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing; use of heavy powered cleaning equipment;
and ability to work indoors and occasionally outdoors under varying weather conditions. Personal protective equipment may be required.
- The Environmental Services Technicians (Housekeeping Aid) maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families as essential to the patient care experience.
- You will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties alongside other Veterans who make up 85% of the housekeeping staff.
- Handle spills quickly, discard trash, install light bulbs, vacuum and polish floors, clean wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas.
- Sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows, and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers, and move furniture.
- Carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
