Job Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Nutrition Sciences in the Schools of Health Professions and Medicine, is seeking a faculty member in the area of nutrition and metabolism. This will be a full-time, 12-month faculty appointment. Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The ideal candidate will have an established record of accomplishment of academic excellence, mentoring, scientific leadership, extramural grant funding, and an established research program in the area nutrition and metabolism that complements and expands our existing research portfolio.
The Department of Nutrition Sciences ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) is chaired by Barbara
A. Gower, PhD, and has 25 full-time faculty members and more than 100 staff, students, and postdoctoral fellows involved in basic, animal, physiologic, clinical, and community-based research, patient care, and teaching. The Department offers numerous nutrition-related education programs, including an undergraduate major and minor, a broad portfolio of masters degrees, a doctoral program, and a dietetic internship, and directs three NIH-funded T-32 training programs.
UAB is a flourishing urban university and medical center with research funding exceeding $715 million.
UAB and the Department of Nutrition Sciences are ideally positioned for sophisticated studies in human and animal metabolism. The department has a robust portfolio of extramural research funding and hosts two NIDDK-supported research centers (the Nutrition Obesity Research Center and the Diabetes Research Center). The department houses core facilities that include a metabolic kitchen, a whole-room indirect calorimetry suite, and a full-service research analytical laboratory that are available for use in basic and clinical research.
UAB's CCTS provides a fully staffed clinical research unit that is available for inpatient and outpatient studies requiring nursing care (e.g., euglycemic clamp, oral glucose tolerance test). Stable isotope preparation and analytical facilities are offered through the School of Medicine. An animal phenotyping core, supported by the NORC and the DRC, provides indirect calorimetry and body composition services.
