The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Temp Services is seeking a Patient Encounter Specialist. The role involves working under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performing specialized services in support of the operations of the assigned clinic. Duties include checking in scheduled and add‑on patients, answering telephone calls, routing calls, and entering demographic, insurance, and charge data into the system.
The specialist also checks patients out of the clinic, performs patient follow‑up as necessary, and may perform other clerical duties related to collection, deposit, and recording of clinic revenue. The position requires consistent demonstration of outstanding customer service to patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform various patient registration duties: obtain and verify patient demographic and insurance information; review general and financial comments in the system and take appropriate action; complete registration in appropriate systems; ensure patient receives HIPAA notice information; obtain appropriate authorizations; schedule follow‑up appointments/tests.
- Accurately complete tasks related to patient financial responsibilities. Perform financial/billing duties, collect co‑payments and account balances, and coordinate patient financial issues with the financial counselor as appropriate.
- Ensure efficient daily operations for clinic/department: answer phone and route messages in a timely manner; manage task and clinic bump lists as required; regularly round on patient areas to ensure a welcoming and patient‑friendly environment.
- Perform a variety of clerical support functions for the clinic: rotate responsibilities within the waiting room; maintain office equipment; manage mail; stock supplies; validate parking; escort patients; copy documents.
- Accurately collect, post and reconcile payments: post charges/payments in appropriate system(s); reconcile charge/payment batches; prepare deposits.
- Work various reports as required: missing charge report, referral/pre‑cert, wait list and pending information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- One year of customer service experience required. Business Office education or similar coursework desired.
