In Respiratory Care CVICU and CCU at Main Campus Lowder Building

Work schedule will be Full‑time on the Day Shift, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (12‑hour shifts).

Job Summary

A certified respiratory therapist (CRT) eligible to be registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) may be required to deliver respiratory care services in all areas of the hospital, including intensive care units, medical and surgical floors, emergency departments, post‑anesthesia care units, infant nurseries, and chronic care units. A non‑eligible CRT may be required to work in all areas except the critical care areas.

The therapist must adapt to the particular area of duty assigned, perform special duties required by the assignment, supervise and be responsible for other respiratory care practitioners, and may be assigned orientation and in‑service education responsibilities. The CRT may serve as a mentor for clinical rotation students at Children’s of Alabama. The CRT works under the technical supervision of the Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinators, with direct administrative supervision from the area Respiratory Care Manager and the Respiratory Care Department Head.

Duties are carried out according to policies, procedures, and guidelines approved by the Medical Director.

Credentials with Equivalent Qualifications
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist
  • Basic Life Support
  • Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist or Temporary Licensed Respiratory Therapist
Education with Equivalent Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy
Experience with Equivalent Qualifications
  • 2 years job experience as staff‑level respiratory therapist with specialization in the field of respiratory therapy (non‑essential)

The Cardiovascular ICU has 20 beds. In chronic and acute care areas, therapists develop essential skills while caring for patients of all ages and treatment needs. Critical Care respiratory therapists are integral members of the patient care team, working with physicians and nurses using evidence‑based practices and latest technologies.
