Overview

In Respiratory Care PICU at Main Campus Lowder Building. Work schedule will be Full-time on the Night Shift, 7p-7a.

Responsibilities

A certified respiratory therapist (CRT) who is eligible to be registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) may be required to deliver respiratory care services in all areas of the hospital (e.g., intensive care units, medical and surgical floors, emergency departments, post‑anesthesia care units, infant nurseries, and the chronic care units). The CRT who is not eligible for NBRC registration may be required to work in all areas of the hospital except the critical care areas.

The therapist must adapt to the particular area of duty assigned and perform any special duties required by the assignment. The CRT may be required to supervise and be responsible for the work of other respiratory care practitioners, assist with orientation and in‑service education, and serve as a mentor for students of respiratory therapy participating in clinical rotations at Children’s of Alabama.

The CRT works under the technical supervision and clinical guidance of the Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinators; direct administrative supervision is provided by the area Respiratory Care Manager and the Respiratory Care Department Head. Duties are carried out in accordance with policies, procedures, and guidelines approved by the Medical Director of the department, and standards of performance for the assigned area must be maintained.

Credentials with Equivalent Qualifications
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist
  • Basic Life Support
  • Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist or Temporary Licensed Respiratory Therapist
Education with Equivalent Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy
Experience with Equivalent Qualifications
  • 2 Years job experience as Staff Level with specialization in the field of Respiratory Therapy (nonessential)

Respiratory therapists at Children’s of Alabama practice in an environment conducive to learning and professional growth. They work with other healthcare professionals committed to providing family‑centered care to patients in a variety of settings. Respiratory therapists in the Pulmonary Care Unit specialize in the care and treatment of patients with a variety of lung disorders, including asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases, pneumonias, sleep disorders, lung problems related to neuromuscular disorders, and ventilator dependence.

Respiratory therapists practicing in the chronic and acute care areas of the hospital have the opportunity to develop and expand essential skills while caring for patients of all ages and treatment needs. Critical Care respiratory therapists are integral members of the patient care team, working closely with physicians and nurses to provide care following the most current evidence‑based medical practices and utilizing the latest technologies.

Respiratory therapists are also part of a 48‑bed neonatal ICU and collaborate within supportive team environments to ensure each patient is treated safely and effectively.

Schedule

Night Shift, 12‑hour shifts, 7p-7a.
