Peer Support Specialist

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) provides peer support services to all members with serious mental illnesses or substance abuse within the assigned region. Under supervision of the Manager, Case Management, the Peer Support Specialist will function as a role model to members, having personally overcome the challenges that recovery represents; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a member advocate, providing member information and peer support for members in outpatient and inpatient settings.

The PSS performs a wide range of tasks to assist members of all ages, in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. Educational resources and recovery materials will be shared with the members, based on their behavioral health needs. The Peer Support Specialist will also assist members with post-discharge stabilization through outreach calls and through face-to-face interaction and is responsible for making informed aftercare appointments for members being discharged from higher levels of treatment.

Member Recovery & Wellness Planning:
Provide day-to-day support across levels of care, helping members engage in services, navigate transitions, and achieve recovery goals. Develop individualized recovery and wellness plans that build on members' strengths, skills, and resources to promote self-sufficiency and long-term recovery.

Care Coordination & Community Engagement:
Collaborate with case managers, treatment teams, and members to identify actionable steps toward recovery, self-management, and wellness goals. Connect members with community resources, peer supports, and natural support networks that align with their behavioral health and recovery needs.

Advocacy, Education & Program Support:
Foster recovery-focused relationships through peer support, self-advocacy, resilience-building, and use of recovery-oriented tools such as WRAP. Educate members and providers on benefits, services, and resources while participating in outreach, team activities, training, and ongoing professional development.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Self-identify as having personal life experience with the process of recovery from a mental illness and/or substance use disorder. Completed local state Peer Specialist Certificate Program. 2-3+ years of experience in mental health and substance use recovery advocacy or related field. Strong computer and keyboarding skills (MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat and data processing), including the ability to document while simultaneously taking information over the phone.

Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organization skills. Valid driver license and proof of insurance. Ability to pass background check upon hire and throughout employment to include criminal felony & misdemeanor search, SSN validation/trace search (LEIE), education report (highest degree obtained), civil upper and lower search, 7-year employment report, federal criminal search, statewide criminal search, widescreen plus national criminal search, health care sanctions-state med (SAM), national sex offender registry, prohibited parties (OFAC) (terrorist watchlist), and a 10-Panel Drug Screen.
