ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

THE TUTWILER HOTEL, BIRMINGHAM A DOUBLETREE BY HILTON

Where Birmingham's Grand Past Meets Its Boldest Future

Step into a building with a story — and help write its next chapter.

Since 1914, the Tutwiler has stood at the corner of history and hospitality in the heart of downtown Birmingham. Its arched windows have watched the city grow up around it. Its lobby has hosted decades of arrivals, farewells, celebrations, and second chances. And right now, in the middle of an exciting transformation into a Double Tree by Hilton, the Tutwiler is entering one of the most electric chapters of its 100-plus-year history — and we need an Assistant General Manager who's ready to lead the charge on the ground floor of it all.

This isn't a caretaker role. This is a builder's role. A rebrand-and-relaunch role. A “walk into work every day knowing you're shaping something” role. If you've been waiting for the hotel job where your fingerprints end up on the finished product, this is it.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As Assistant General Manager, you are the engine room of this hotel. You're the second-in-command, the Manager on Duty, the steady hand across Front Desk, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Banquets & Catering, Engineering, Security, and every guest-facing moment in between. You'll partner directly with the General Manager to drive performance, elevate service, and carry the property through its transition to the Double Tree flag — all while preserving the irreplaceable historic character that makes the Tutwiler unlike any other hotel in Birmingham.

Full-service means full scope. You won't just be running a front desk — you'll be orchestrating a living, breathing hotel: restaurant and bar service, banquet and event execution, culinary partnership, revenue performance, safety and compliance, and a team of people counting on you to lead with energy and clarity every single day.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN Property-Wide Leadership
  • Direct daily operations across Front Desk, Housekeeping, Reservations, Guest Services, Food & Beverage, Banquets & Catering, Engineering, and Security.

  • Serve as Manager on Duty and be the calm, confident presence the team looks to when the pace picks up.

Food, Beverage & Events That Wow
  • Partner with the Executive Chef and F&B leadership to deliver standout dining, bar, and in-room experiences.

  • Oversee banquet and catering execution down to the last detail on the BEO, ensuring every wedding, conference, and celebration feels as memorable as the building itself.

Guest Experiences People Remember
  • Champion service recovery, VIP treatment, and hospitality that turns a one-night stay into a lifelong loyalty story.

  • Dig into guest satisfaction data and turn insight into action.

Revenue & Financial Performance
  • Drive ADR and occupancy growth through operational excellence.

  • Own budgets, labor controls, and cost management across every revenue center — rooms, F&B, and banquets alike.

  • Safety, Standards & Brand Transformation

  • Lead the property's safety program and ensure every corner of the Tutwiler meets brand standards — including the ones actively evolving through the Double Tree conversion.

  • Help translate a national brand promise into a distinctly Birmingham experience.

A Team Worth Leading
  • Coach, motivate, and develop department leaders.

  • Build a culture where accountability and enthusiasm aren't opposites — they're the same thing.

WHY THIS ROLE, WHY NOW
  • You'll help lead a rebrand from the inside. Few hospitality professionals get to say they helped carry a landmark property through a flag change. You will.

  • You'll work inside a building people fall in love with — soaring ceilings, century-old architecture, and a downtown Birmingham address steps from the Convention Complex, the Alabama Theatre, and the city's best energy.

  • You'll have real scope: a full-service property with real F&B, real banquets, real complexity — the kind of role that builds serious hospitality leaders.

  • You'll be second-in-command, not a bystander. When the General Manager is out, you're not holding down the fort — you're leading it.

WHAT YOU BRING Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 2–3 years of hotel supervisory or management…
