Job Description

Under general supervision from Manager and Systems Analyst Architect, the Communication Engineer is responsible for successfully executing a diverse range of telecommunications projects related to Nortel, Norstar and Cisco VoIP System deployment and on-going maintenance. Independent judgment and decision-making skills are required.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Consult with users prior to performing assigned telecommunications service requests to ensure accuracy of work to be performed.
  • Assist customers with routine questions. Train customers on Telecom operating procedures for telephones, both wired and wireless, voicemail, Cisco Finesse, Cisco Unified Intelligence Center reporting and various other systems as needed.
  • Configure and install fax lines. Install, maintain and repair Paging interface systems.
  • Install new telephones (Cisco VoIP/SIP and Meridian) and fax lines by making cross-connects on MDF and IDF and patch panels. This requires a thorough knowledge of the wiring color code. Must be knowledgeable of the various wiring standards. Performs troubleshooting on various telephone systems as needed. Perform moves and changes on telephony equipment as needed.
  • Assist with the installation, programming and maintenance of VG310 and VG450 equipment. This includes installing hardware, associated patch panels and running patch cables as needed. Must also assist in performing upgrades and troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed, travel locally as needed, work on-call as needed and perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Associate's degree in Information Systems or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.

Preferred Skills
  • Directly related experience supporting an advanced telecommunication system/network.
  • Previous experience or training in a networking or telecommunications related field with any of the following:
    Norstar, Nortel, Call Pilot, Meridian Mail, Cisco Unified Call Manager, Unity Connect systems.
  • Ability to punch down cross connects on both 66 and 110 blocks.
  • Ability to tone cables using a toner/probe.
  • Must be a highly detailed oriented individual with proven project management skills.
